Android 2.1 is of course old news by know, but people rocking the SE Xperia X10 are still stuck with 1.6 and without doubt want a taste of Éclair. A luring video has appeared from the recent IFA tech conference in Berlin, Germany that shows an X10 running Android 2.1. Well, it’s post-IFA and if you aren’t tablet drunk, especially Android tablet drunk then you must have one heck of a high tolerance. We got a chance to see some of the latest tablets and even some that are actually coming to market . But according to Google, Android is still not meant for tablets, at least in its current state. We have heard rumors of what the next versions of Android (Gingerbread and Honeycomb) may or may not be...

Apps, Apps, Apps, is the current trend in the mobile phone industry. This app-driven economy has even pushed the Android Market beyond the 80,000 app threshold according to recent comments from Android godfather Andy Rubin. That’s up from the 70,000 reported in July. In an uncoordinated but related piece of news, Nielsen announced today that games rank high on the totem of what users seek in app stores and markets. Nielsen surveyed more...

There are times when discussions become sidetracked because the participating parties fail to understand or misappropriate the definition of key terms that affect the issue. Android is one of those cases because people tend to speak of the always vague and evolving “spirit of open.” Open source is not a spirit; it’s a term and license form that fosters innovation through shared knowledge. It means that developers and software...

As one of the parents in a tween/teen 4-kid family, my family calendar is very complicated. Music lessons, soccer, karate, and parent teacher conferences (not to mention homework and special projects) all conspire to make my daily life a crazy affair. Google calendar is a perfect solution: I can input everyone’s schedule on one family calendar (making each person a separate color-coded calendar entry) and see the whole week’s wackiness...

Google advanced its search portfolio with a new product that provides instant results. The aptly-named Google Instant can now perform search queries without requiring users to hit the enter key. As the user types a word or phrase, Instant predicts what that person is looking for and updates its prediction with live results. And of course, it’s coming to Android. Instant search is currently available only on the desktop to users in the...

They swallow up system resources, speed up the death of your battery life, and do little more than animate something that you see for a few seconds at a time, so why are Android users so obsessed with live wallpapers? Because they’re flipping cool! Live wallpapers are only available on devices capable of running Android’s more powerful feature, but they are a pleasure to have. They animate the background and make for an enjoyable, however...

Yahoo! did it and then ESPN did it, too. Now HuddleHub has emerged as the Android app that will hopefully meet the needs of users of both fantasy football services. HuddleHub just launched in the Android Market, bringing with it the ability to manage fantasy football franchises in leagues run through ESPN.com or Yahoo.com. After registering for a HuddleHub account, users connect their accounts on the other sites and are then able to monitor...

The images captured on your mobile phone are fine, but wouldn’t it be nice to spruce them up just a little bit? Perhaps you could use the old-style LOMO effect, colorize the image so it’s predominantly red, or throw on some funny glasses onto your face? Android users can do that and more with the photo app PhotoWonder . Images taken with the camera – or stored on the SD card – can be opened and edited with a variety of...

After the big AppleTV announcement last week we Google fanboys are left wondering just when and what Google is going to do with their Google TV plans. According to Bloomberg, Samsung may be including Google TV in their future HDTV offerings. If this is the case, it could give Google TV the boost that it needs to make it in the mainstream. As it stands now, Sony is the current launch partner for Google TV and because of that we should see some...

The Samsung Fascinate is essentially Verizon’s rendition of the popular Galaxy S, and it will join the already available Captivate (AT&T) and Vibrant (T-Mobile). Just hours before Samsung introduced its new Orion processor powerhouse yesterday, LG announced that it will ship Android phones with dual-core CPUs in Q4 this year. LG has teamed up with NVIDIA and the upcoming devices will be part of LG’s Optimus series and feature the system-on-a-chip Tegra 2 . I have always had a soft-spot for NVIDIA’s Tegra processor, but so far it has had a hard time finding its way to the market – that will...

The circle is complete. After all the nay-saying and fear that was surrounding the DROID X and the DROID 2 being locked down so tight that “modding” and “hacking” the devices would not be possible, it appears that the DROID 2 has its first “custom” ROM. We use the term custom lightly, this is actually just a cleaned-up version of the stock ROM that is included with the D2. The ROM is known as the EPIC ROM...
